Recap of Umer Sharif’s career and life

Umar Sharif started his career at the age of 14 years with stand-up comedy. He captured the Karachi audience’s attention, who liked to have light, uncomplicated fun. Eventually, Umer Sharif gained popularity in the sub-continent in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s.

One distinctly remembers his stage plays — Bakra Qiston Per and Buddha Ghar Pe Hai — being played on audio cassettes in shops and homes in Lahore and blaring through the speakers installed in minibusses in Karachi.

Eventually, Umer Sharif graduated to films, and his stay in Lahore as a film actor and director was reasonably fruitful. He received the National Award for ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Actor’ in 1992 for the superhit film ‘Mr 420’. With the advent of satellite TV, Sharif returned to his hometown Karachi and started hosting TV shows like ‘The Shareef Show’.
