Wait Over! Teaser of Sajal Aly's web series 'Fatima Jinnah' released
The prologue teaser of the web series based on the life of Mother of the Nation Ms. Fatima Jinnah is out now and it depicts her life story as it spans three different eras as a sister, a revolutionist, and later coming out as a stateswoman.
Being a patriotic Pakistani, we have read about Fatima Jinnah and her unparalleled spirit with which she supported her brother Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah every step of the way. However, many of us know very little about the woman behind one of the biggest and most important revolutions in world history.
Daniyal K Afzal’s upcoming web series Fatima Jinnah aims to convey an interesting visual and historical piece based on one of Pakistan’s first female politicians. The series is divided into three different periods of her life. Sundus Farhan, Sajal Aly, and Samiya Mumtaz will be seen playing one of the most under-credited revolutionaries of history in each era respectively.
The year 1929
The 14-minute long teaser opens with a scene from 1929 where we see Sundus Farhan as a 30-year-old Fatima Jinnah, draped in an ivory sari, sitting in her dental clinic. Looking at the newspaper announcing Rattanbai’s death, Jinnah’s wife. She is now looking for a caretaker for her beloved niece Dina Wadia and is simultaneously placing a “Notice of Cessation” on her desk. She is discussing unknown matters with her Confidant Joseph, while on her desk is an unopened letter from Harindranath Chattopadhyay.
The year 1947
The scene then takes us straight to Lahore’s North West Railway Junction in 1947, where an emigrant train carrying many passengers to Pakistan was attacked. Actress Sajal Aly can be seen here as Fatima Jinnah in her 50s as they all step into the bogies one by one and witness death before their eyes. She finds a baby crying in the arms of a dead mother.
After hearing a sudden crash, Joseph rushes to the next carriage, only to discover a traumatized girl with her eyes wide open, crushed under the poor corpse. She starts screaming for her life as Fatima also stands in front of her numbly. As the screams reverberate, so does the pain come with the realization that this is the price of Pakistan’s freedom, the reward of an independent state.
The Year 1965
The story then moves on to the Katrak-Parsi colony of Karachi, which was then the federal capital of Pakistan. Versatile actress Samiya Mumtaz plays Fatima in the 70s. She is silently looking around as the call to prayer echoes in the background. We hear an announcement that “Mohatram Fatima Jinnah has decided to return to politics.” She is still seen reading the mysterious, now outdated letter, which she received in 1929. Later, she steps out of her house to address the public.
The series looks quite appealing and the performances are quite impressive, however, how much it will light up the Pakistani nation can only be gauged after it airs. It also stars Dananeer Mobeen, journalist Anita Poonamwala, and Omar Abdullah Khan as confidant Joseph. The series is produced by Aur Digital and is said to release in 2023.
