OIC expresses concerns over life imprisonment of Yasin Malik

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed deep concern over the life imprisonment of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Yasin Malik by India.

In a message released on the social networking site Twitter, the OIC said that Yasin Malik was the most important Kashmiri leader who was leading the peaceful struggle for independence.

In the statement, the OIC further said that the real struggle of Kashmiris for independence should not be linked with terrorism, demanded the release of all Kashmiri leaders from India, and immediate cessation of atrocities in occupied Kashmir.

It may be recalled that an Indian court had on May 19 convicted Kashmiri Hurriyat leader Yasin Malik in a fake terrorism funding case. However, on Wednesday, Malik was twice sentenced to life imprisonment by an Indian court while he was also fined Rs 1 million.

On the other hand, a joint sitting of the parliament yesterday unanimously passed a resolution condemning the sentence of Yasin Malik, the Hurriyat leader of occupied Kashmir.

The resolution was presented by Federal Minister for Human Rights Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada in a meeting chaired by National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf.

The resolution said that the House condemns the heinous attempt of the Indian government to deprive the Kashmiri people of their true leadership which is a clear violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
