According to reports, there is possibility of an electric Hyundai Sonata, but the company is prioritizing the development of a compact electric car rather than a less popular mid-sized vehicle. Furthermore, Hyundai already has a mid-sized electric sedan in the works with the Ioniq 6, which is set to be revealed this year (2022).

It bears mentioning that Hyundai Sonata is scheduled for an update in 2023 as most models of the vehicle usually have a lifecycle of around five years and the current model was released in 2019. The new model (if the vehicle isn’t discontinued) will carry some major changes as the current generation was not well-received in its home market.

It is pertinent to mention that Hyundai Sonata was the sixth best-selling car in its home market. As recently as 2015, however, it was the best-selling car in Korea. It bears mentioning that SUVs have become increasingly popular and taken a huge chunk of the market away from sedans.

Hyundai Sonata has been the brand’s longest-running nameplate, having first debuted in 1985 and it has been around for 37 years. However, the company is reportedly discontinuing the vehicle, but it is expected that the sedan may receive a last facelift that may keep the vehicle afloat for a few more years in some markets.
