Demand for closure of Guantanamo Bay

It should be noted that the notorious US prison at Guantanamo Bay can be considered as the most controversial symbol of the US war on terror which is considered as a disgraceful stain on the global image of the US.

The Biden administration has revived efforts to close Guantanamo Bay before leaving power following a review. Former US President Barack Obama has promised to close Guantanamo Bay.

President Barack Obama faced stiff political opposition. The United States established Guantanamo Bay in 2002 to hold foreign suspects, most of whom are suspected terrorists.

Guantanamo Bay soon became the target of international criticism and outrage over its ill-treatment and torture of detainees, as well as its long detention, with many serving up to 20 years in prison without trial.
