Federal Government To Abolish The Autonomy Of Higher Education Commission

The federal government has announced to abolish the autonomy of the higher education commission of Pakistan. According to the concerned authorities, HEC will subordinate to the ministry of education. All the rights to take the decision related to the academic and examination matters will be shifted to the ministry of education. The federal cabinet has approved the ordinance related to this matter. After the implementation of this decision, all the proposals made by the higher education commission will be subject to the approval of the ministry of education. 

 

Approval By President

The president of Pakistan, Arif Alvi has also approved the ordinance and it has been named as the HEC amendment ordinance 2021. According to the HEC ordinance, the chairperson of the commission will be appointed for two years while the other members will be appointed for four years. The president also said that the chairperson and the other members will not be eligible for the re-appointment after completing their term. Moreover, the president has taken back the authority of appointing the executive director from the federal education ministry and shifted it to the commission and the number of the members of HEC has been increased from 10 to 13 that also includes the private member. The HEC amendment ordinance will be effective from 26th March 2021. 

 

Higher Education Commission

The higher education commission of Pakistan is an autonomous body that was established in 2002. The main objective of the commission is to provide quality education to the students living in the various areas of the country. The HEC is based in Islamabad and it regulates 220 public and private universities across Pakistan so by curtailing the autonomy of the commission the education set-ups will face difficulties.
